What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. Ultrasound refers to an oscillating sound pressure wave that operates at a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing range.
While ultrasound and audible sound share similar physical properties, the distinction lies in the fact that humans cannot hear ultrasound. The upper limit of human hearing typically ranges around 20 kilohertz (20,000 hertz) for healthy, young adults.
Ultrasound devices, on the other hand, operate within frequencies ranging from 20 kHz up to several gigahertz. Ultrasound finds applications in various fields, with its primary uses in skin lifting, adipose tissue removal, and cancer treatment. The effects of ultrasonic waves can be categorized as follows:
1) Mechanical Effect.
2) Cavitation Effect.
3) Thermal Effect: Ultrasonic waves are transferred to tissues and absorbed, resulting in the conversion of energy into heat.

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
HIFU is an advanced medical procedure that employs highly precise ultrasound energy to heat and destroy specific areas of diseased or damaged tissue through ablation. By focusing ultrasound beams on the targeted tissue, HIFU generates significant energy deposition at the focal point. This causes the temperature within the tissue to rise, typically reaching levels between 65°C and 85°C. The elevated temperatures induce coagulation necrosis, effectively destroying the diseased tissue. To prevent the boiling of liquids inside the tissue, higher temperature levels are generally avoided.

Mechanism of HIFU Treatment
During HIFU treatment, ultrasound is delivered into the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System), fascia, deep dermis, and subcutaneous fibrous tissue. This process generates an increase in temperature. Once the temperature exceeds 47°C, which is the threshold for protein denaturation, a coagulation zone is formed. The surrounding tissue/muscle fills this zone, resulting in increased elasticity of the skin and muscle, leading to tightened wrinkles.
